What
The first person to improve his Wesnoth ranking with 200 is declared the winner of:

  • €22 or the equivalent donated to a paypal account.

  • the winner title in the user profile

  • a custom wesnoth related avatar, not selectable by any other ladder comrades.

The second person to do the same also gets the above except for the cash. The third person gets the 3:d place title in the user profile.

Why
For us it's to promote another side of open source gaming, and Wesnoth in particular. We don't earn a cent by doing this and we don't have any commercial interests. Why you want to play is up to you to decide, but we figure you'd want to do it because Wesnoth is a great game and you might as well might earn a symbolic treat by playing it.

While you're here we also want to ask you to support any open source project you hold dear – by using, spreading, developing and/or beeing a part of it's community you make a huge difference. Lastly we want to get the word out that we're looking for a photoshop person to make us a simple template for our free CCG project at subversiva.org and also a php coder for that and/or the wesnoth ladder.

When
The contest begins at 00:01 GMT on the 25:th of December 2007, which is the same as midnight of the the 24:th. All valid games played and reported to the ladder from that time on count towards your uprising or demise. The contest doesn't end until we have a winner, runner up and third place holder, and we declare them officially.

How
Register at the ladder, read all the rules, ask us if anything's unclear and start playing. No special registration beyond that is necessary. The spirit of Christmas is here soon enough...

Rules
The rules are the same as for normal ladder games and can be found here on the site. The only exceptions and additions to them are:

  • Your starting rank is x, where x is the rank you have on the start of the 25:th of December. If you sign up after the 25:th of December your starting rank will be 1500.

  • For you to win a) x must be greater or equal to x + 200 b) you must achieve that before the others.

  • You may only play up to 2 ladder games per day.

  • Once the contest starts the maximum amount of games in total against the same opponent may not be larger than 2. Games played against that person before the contest start aren't taken into account.

  • No observers are allowed while playing.

  • Game names in the lobby should be: (L) ladder.subversiva.org (Player1Nick Rating vs Player2Nick Rating)

  • All games must be saved and kept by you as replays and handed over to use for verification if you'd claim the throne.

  • All reported games count if the contest is on. You can't select which to count or not, and the same goes for your Elo ranking.

  • You aren't allowed to reveal, directly or indirectly, if you or anyone else has won, came second or third while the contest is ongoing. Once we have all of the 3 top players we'll announce them and call of the contest.

  • As soon as you have your 200 points or larger increase in rank, double checked your games history to see that all your games were valid and your math is correct, contact us claiming your victory by sending an e-mail. We'll then verify.

  • Breaking any ladder or contest rules can and probably will get you disqualified from the contest and/or ladder without a warning.

  • We reserve the right to revise the rules if we see a need for it and we believe it serves our purpose. If such a revision is made it will be announced as news.

  • We have the final word in everything that relates to this contest and by entering it you accept this and everything else that's stated in the rules. If not, don't enter.

Donate
If you somehow want to sponsor this event you can do so by donating more to the price pot – virtually anything, even $10, would help us out. In return you'll be mentioned with a link in this post, permanently in the faq and when the winners are announced. We reserve the right to refuse accept donations if we feel like it.

Questions
PayPal suck. Can I get the money any other way?

No, not unless you can find an at least as known service for us that will accept VISA and that lets us sign up and use it for free directly after signup and within 5 minutes. Even if you do we don't promise we'll use it as it's our card in the line here. We do however guarantee the winner that he or she will get the money to a paypal account that's open for donations.

Does lower ranked players have an unfair advantage?

This has been thought about a lot and we decided to keep the 200 limit equal for all. There are many perspectives and thoughts on the subject. Summarised we argue that the more skilled players will have an easier time winning once they get a game, and perhaps a harder one to get one in the first place because of their rank. This speaks both for and against them & the rookies. Instead of working out intricate mathematical tables we decided to keep things plain and simple, and also believe that the pro players won't feel intimidated by this since they have something math can't make up for: True skills.

What hinders a highly ranked player from cheating by creating a new account to start out with a rating of 1500?

Several things implemented on the admin side of the site designed to spot such persons. We also feel that a good player doesn't have to resort to cheating and that he'd much rather have the title/avatar on his real account instead of an alter ego.

But what about top players who aren't already signed up, won't they win?

Of course they would win if they're top players – who should win if not the best? Wesnoth isn't a lottery, even if it's not as deterministic as chess. That said, less skilled players still have a good chance of winning since they actually get more points when they beat a good player (thus making that one lose more points) and also because there is now way to say which players enter the competition or who they'll play.

I have a question that isn't in here, where do I go?

Read the FAQ. Then contact us if you still have it, we'd be happy helping you out.

Encourage
Play fair, be polite and a care bear. We'd also love it if you recorded some of your games, commnted them in a constructive way and put them on youtube or somewhere else and told us about it. Wesnoth needs more of that.
