Era rule & Elo change..

Rules have changed so that only the default era is allowed now. Reasons for this is:

  • It's already standard rules in the Wesnoth competetive culture.

  • Maps are balanced for default era even if internal broken(?) balance can arise when using other eras on them.

  • Overall gameplay, what units to buy and leveling changes radically when you play AoH, all in all it's taking away more than its giving back.

  • The rating is supposed to show skills. If more than one era is allowed it breaks measurement since the numbers would mean different things in every players stats and more or less be "subjective".

It's also been decided that the K-value in the Elo rating we use is lowered from 32 to 24 instead. Reasons are complex but it seems as if that number is statistically more sound.

Other reasons for lowering it is that Wesnoth actually has a small element of "luck" involved in contrast to chess. That, and that it will take more games of equal skills now to make the larger leaps ranking wise. Using a K of 32 simply makes it too sensitive to a handful of games.

The impact this will have on the ladders current ranking based on 32 is minor as most haven't played that many games. Those currently ranked as the top players would slowly decay of they aren't really that skilled, and vice versa. This, and the fact that there will be a limit of a minimum of 10 played games in the future to even be listed in the ladder will take care of the problems.
